Ohio Man Accused of Killing Girlfriend and Shooting Her Two Sons After Late-Night Argument in Akron Home

AKRON, OHIO — A late-night argument inside an Akron home turned deadly when a 38-year-old man allegedly shot and stabbed his girlfriend before turning the gun on her two sons, leaving one injured and the other narrowly escaping harm. Police say Gregory Tillman is now facing multiple charges including murder, domestic violence, and assault.

Argument Inside Home Escalates Into Deadly Attack

The violence unfolded early Saturday at a home on Miles Avenue, where 44-year-old Rebecca Guthrie lived with her two sons. Guthrie’s boyfriend, Tillman, was also at the house when tensions between the couple escalated.

Guthrie’s 18-year-old son, Marquis Terrell, told reporters he initially dismissed the argument as typical.

“I heard my mother and her boyfriend arguing, but they argue all the time,” he said. “I didn’t think it was anything crazy.”

Moments later, the situation turned violent.

Sons Describe Chaotic Moments as Shots Were Fired

Terrell says gunshots erupted from downstairs, followed by the sound of his mother yelling for Tillman to stop.

“And then he ran upstairs and shot my brother,” Terrell said.

The 25-year-old son was grazed in the head by a bullet. Terrell says Tillman then tried to shoot him next — but the weapon malfunctioned.

“He tried to point the gun at me and shoot me, but it clicked twice,” Terrell said. “Then he tried to shoot my brother again. My brother wrestled the gun out of his hand.”

With the gun out of reach, Tillman fled the house. Terrell immediately called 911, pleading for help as his mother lay critically injured.

Victim Found with Stab and Gunshot Wounds

Akron police arrived around 2:10 a.m. and found Guthrie unresponsive on the living room floor with multiple stab wounds and a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead roughly 20 minutes later.

The 25-year-old son was hospitalized and is recovering, authorities said.

Suspect Arrested Nearby and Held Without Bond

Police located Tillman a short distance from the home and arrested him. Court records show he is charged with:

  • Murder
  • Assault
  • Domestic violence
  • Vandalism
  • Having weapons while under disability

He is currently being held at the Summit County Jail with no bond allowed.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not yet released additional details about prior incidents or what sparked the deadly argument.
