Kentucky Mother Arrested After Police Say She Abandoned 1-Year-Old in Vacant Apartment With Door Left Unlocked
RICHMOND, KENTUCKY — A 34-year-old mother is behind bars after police say she abandoned her 1-year-old daughter inside a vacant apartment on Villa Drive, leaving the child alone in a playpen with no food and the front door unlocked. Court documents reveal the mother, Sarah Vicker, left a handwritten goodbye note to her significant other before walking away from the residence.
Police Say Baby Was Left Alone for Nearly Two Hours
According to the arrest report, Vicker left her daughter inside the apartment late Wednesday morning and walked away, later telling investigators that “my flesh and spirit could not take it no longer, so I left.”
Richmond Police found her around 1:15 p.m. inside the Revival Tabernacle, located roughly a mile and a half from the apartment. Officers say nearly two hours passed before they located the mother and confirmed that the baby had been left unattended.
Inside the apartment, officers found the child confined to a playpen with no food, positioned next to a 65-inch television within reach, raising immediate safety concerns.
Goodbye Note Left Behind, Documents Say
Court documents state that Vicker left a message for her partner before abandoning the apartment. While officers did not detail the full contents of the note, investigators said the message suggested she intended to leave without returning.
The child had reportedly been fed about two hours before Vicker walked out, but authorities emphasized that leaving an infant alone in an unsecured, vacant unit created severe risk.
Mother Held on Bond; Arraignment Scheduled Friday
Vicker was arrested and charged with:
- First-degree criminal abuse (child 12 or under)
- Abandonment of a child
She is currently being held at the Madison County Detention Center on a $10,000 bond, according to jail records. Her arraignment is scheduled for Friday in Madison District Court.
Police have not released additional details about the child’s current condition or who has temporary custody.
