Models Show Illinois and Surrounding Midwest States at Center of Powerful Arctic Blast Next Weekend, With Extreme Cold Risk Growing

SPRINGFIELD, IL — A serious signal is emerging for an intense arctic blast that could plunge Illinois and much of the Midwest into extreme cold next weekend. Meteorologists warn that the coming outbreak may be stronger than early forecasts suggest, with new ensemble maps highlighting Illinois as the core impact zone for the deepest temperature anomalies.

Model Maps Highlight Illinois as the Center of Extreme Cold

Fresh data from GFS and ECMWF temperature anomaly products show a concentrated region of deep purple and magenta shading centered directly over Illinois.
Across December 13–16, models consistently show temperature departures of:

  • 15°F to 25°F below normal across Illinois, Indiana, and Missouri
  • Widespread below-average temperatures extending into Kentucky, Ohio, Iowa, and the Great Lakes

Risk maps included in the analysis label Illinois and the central Midwest under a “Moderate Risk” for extreme cold between December 14–15, while a broader region from the Mid-South to the Appalachians falls under a “Slight Risk” through December 16.

Meteorologists say the agreement among multiple models adds confidence that this outbreak will be significant.

Cold Expected to Intensify as Weekend Approaches

The latest GFS runs illustrate a rapidly expanding cold core, beginning in the Northern Plains and diving southeast into the Midwest, with Illinois directly in the path of the sharpest temperature crash.

The maps for Saturday, December 13, and Sunday, December 14, show:

  • A solid block of sub-zero anomalies centered over Illinois
  • Arctic air expanding toward the Ohio Valley and Mid-South
  • Warmer western U.S. temperatures sharply contrasting the extreme cold east of the Rockies

Meteorologists tracking the outbreak warn that the severity of the cold may be underpredicted, as many forecasters are not yet considering a critical atmospheric parameter shown in these ensemble products.

Experts Warn: “It’s Only Going to Get Worse”

The commentary attached to the maps emphasizes rising concern:

It’s only going to get worse,” one meteorologist noted, referencing the deepening cold signature across consecutive model runs.

Another concern is consistency:
Every new update shows colder anomalies, not weaker ones.

This suggests that Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Missouri could face one of their most intense December cold outbreaks in years, potentially the strongest since the previous February.

What Illinois and Midwest Residents Should Expect

While exact temperatures will firm up closer to the event, the pattern strongly supports:

  • Sharp temperature drop late next week
  • Dangerously cold wind chills, especially in rural areas
  • Increased heating demand across the state
  • Potential freeze risks for exposed infrastructure and livestock operations
  • Travel impacts if moisture interacts with the advancing arctic front

Energy providers and agricultural operators may need to prepare for extended periods of below-normal temperatures.
