Texas Mother Arrested After Special Needs Daughter, 22, Found Locked in Backyard Dog Kennel While Screaming for Help, Police Say
TEXAS – A 60-year-old Anson woman is behind bars after authorities say she locked her 22-year-old special needs daughter inside an outdoor dog kennel, leaving the young woman screaming in fear as a neighbor recorded the scene and confronted the mother.
Kandy Thompson, 60, has been charged with aggravated kidnapping, injury to a disabled person, and criminal negligence, among other offenses. Police responded to the home on Nov. 22 after a neighbor heard desperate screams coming from the backyard, Anson Police Chief Daniel Graziose told Law&Crime.
The neighbor recorded a video as he approached the backyard, where a chain-link dog kennel—covered with a tarp—held the victim, who could be heard crying out, “I’m scared.” Local outlets KTAB/KRBC later obtained and aired the footage.
Neighbor Confronted the Mother as Victim Screamed ‘I’m Scared’
In the video, the neighbor asked Thompson directly:
“You lock your kid in a dog kennel?”
Thompson acknowledged that she did, claiming the victim was “tearing things up” and urinating in the house. The neighbor remained stunned, repeatedly questioning why anyone would confine a disabled adult in such conditions.
The victim continued screaming, and at one point the neighbor addressed her gently:
“It’s OK sweetheart … breathe … help is here. This ain’t gonna happen to you again.”
The victim appeared to hyperventilate as he tried to calm her.
Victim Hospitalized; Adult Protective Services Now Involved
Chief Graziose declined to reveal how long the 22-year-old woman had been locked in the kennel or how frequently the abuse occurred. Authorities confirmed that Thompson and her late husband had adopted the victim when she was 2 years old.
After police arrived, the woman was transported to a local hospital, where she was treated and released.
Texas Adult Protective Services is now working with her to ensure she receives appropriate care, support, and a safe living environment moving forward.
Investigation Continues as Thompson Remains in Custody
Thompson was arrested at the scene and remains in custody as prosecutors review potential additional charges related to neglect and abuse of a disabled adult.
