Alabama Attorney Accused of Trying to Kill Her Husband With Fentanyl Three Times in One Month as Client Attempts to Destroy Evidence

CULLMAN COUNTY, ALABAMA — A 74-year-old Alabama attorney is facing attempted murder, elder abuse, and domestic violence charges after prosecutors say she tried to kill her husband three different times in September by putting fentanyl into his food and drinks — and even plotted the attacks with at least one other person. Authorities say one of her own clients attempted to swallow the fentanyl to get rid of evidence tied to the case.

Prosecutors: Three Poisoning Attempts in 16 Days

The criminal complaint alleges that longtime attorney Sara Baker began plotting her husband’s murder on September 1, meeting with another individual to plan how she would administer the deadly opioid.

Baker is accused of attempting to poison her husband on:

  • September 4
  • September 12
  • September 20

Prosecutors say she put what she believed to be fentanyl into his food and/or drinks each time. The victim — who suffered a stroke several years ago and was being cared for by Baker — experienced physical impairment but survived all three attempts.

Complaint: She Intended to Cause Unconsciousness and Severe Harm

According to the affidavit, Baker knowingly caused “stupor, unconsciousness, or other physical or mental impairment” by secretly administering fentanyl without consent. Investigators say she was fully aware of the risks and acted with criminal intent.

Despite celebrating their 29th wedding anniversary in August, prosecutors argue Baker’s motive was rooted in a sustained effort to kill her husband while he depended on her for daily care.

Client Allegedly Swallowed Fentanyl to Hide Evidence

Another woman, Felisha Nichole Cofield, is listed as a witness in the complaint but was herself indicted in August for tampering with physical evidence.

Prosecutors say Cofield — who was being represented by Baker in a separate criminal case — attempted to swallow fentanyl that she believed tied her to Baker’s poisoning attempts.

It remains unclear whether Cofield was the person Baker allegedly conspired with to obtain the fentanyl.

Attorney Community Shocked

Local attorneys expressed disbelief that a veteran lawyer with decades of experience in criminal defense and family law could be involved in such a plot.

“It’s just sad that someone is willing to go that far, especially when they know the consequences,” attorney Will League told WAFF.

Arrest and Current Status

Baker was arrested on Nov. 25 and is currently being held at the Cullman County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.

Her Facebook posts painted the picture of a devoted spouse. In August she wrote:
“Twenty-nine years of marriage to this super guy has been quite a ride… I love you.”
In another post from 2021, she described her husband as someone she was “crazy about.”

Husband Survives Despite Multiple Attempts

Despite the fentanyl exposure, Baker’s husband survived all three poisoning attempts and is expected to continue receiving medical care. Prosecutors say the case reflects an extreme breach of trust within a vulnerable household.
