Alabama Mother Learns Her 7-Year-Old Son Died During Bond Hearing for 90 MPH Crash She Allegedly Caused

MOBILE, ALABAMA — A court in Mobile fell silent Wednesday when a mother on trial suddenly learned that her 7-year-old son had died — a tragic revelation made during her own bond hearing for allegedly causing the crash that killed him.

34-year-old Delyshia Molette is charged with manslaughter and multiple felonies after police say she crashed her vehicle at 90 miles per hour while fleeing law enforcement on November 3. Inside the car were her two sons, ages 7 and 11. Neither was wearing a seat belt.

Courtroom Shock: “Did You Say He Died?”

During the hearing, prosecutors revealed that Molette’s 7-year-old son had succumbed to his injuries from the crash. Molette — who appeared unaware of her son’s death — interrupted the court proceedings in shock.

“Did you say he died? My 7-year-old died?” she shouted, according to WKRG reporters inside the courtroom.

Her 11-year-old son remains hospitalized in critical condition with brain bleeding.

Police Chase Began After Alleged Assault at Publix

According to Semmes Police, the deadly crash followed a violent confrontation earlier that day at a Publix grocery store. Authorities said Molette was caught on surveillance video shoplifting, and when an officer confronted her, she allegedly attacked him.

Investigators said Molette bit the officer’s finger and tried to gouge his eyes, leaving him temporarily unable to feel his hand. She fled the store on foot before police later spotted her in her car, leading to a pursuit through the streets of Mobile.

However, officers said they called off the chase after realizing Molette’s two children were in the back seat. Moments later, her car slammed into a light pole at nearly 90 mph, leaving behind a devastating scene.

Prosecutors Say She Fled to Avoid Losing Custody

During Wednesday’s bond hearing, Molette reportedly told the court that she ran because she was afraid the Department of Human Resources would take her children away.

Police and prosecutors disagreed, arguing that her reckless choices cost her one child’s life and left the other fighting for survival.

Facing Multiple Felonies

Molette was arrested shortly after the crash and now faces a string of serious charges, including:

  • Manslaughter
  • Robbery
  • Resisting arrest
  • Attempting to elude police
  • Assault

She remains in custody at the Mobile County Jail after the judge denied bond, citing both the severity of the charges and the risk of flight.

Community Reaction and Ongoing Investigation

The tragedy has sparked grief and outrage in Mobile, where community members have questioned the decisions that led to the deadly pursuit.

Authorities continue to review bodycam and surveillance footage to determine whether any procedural changes are needed in future chase situations involving children.
