Albuquerque Crime Sweep in International District Leads to 58 Arrests, Stolen Cars Recovered

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico — A weeklong crime suppression operation in Albuquerque’s International District has led to 58 arrests, the recovery of stolen cars, and the seizure of narcotics and firearms, according to the New Mexico State Police.

Weeklong Crackdown Nets Felony Arrests

The operation, which ran from September 22 to September 28, was a coordinated effort involving the 2nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, Probation and Parole, and the Albuquerque Police Department.

Authorities reported 51 felony arrests and 7 misdemeanor arrests, recovery of 8 stolen vehicles, and the seizure of 3 firearms. Officials added that 50 of the individuals taken into custody were repeat offenders.

Notable Incidents During the Operation

On the first day of the sweep, officers tried to stop a silver Acura near San Pablo Street and Dixon Road. The driver, Cassandra Lucero, 25, allegedly fled and hid in an apartment before surrendering. Police recovered a handgun from the vehicle, and Lucero was charged with breaking and entering and possession of a firearm by a felon.

That same day, NMSP’s Auto Theft Suppression Unit found a stolen Hyundai near Florida Street and Phoenix Avenue. The driver, Daniel Chaffin, 47, allegedly attempted to hide methamphetamine before being arrested. Already on probation, Chaffin now faces charges of possession of a controlled substance and receiving a stolen motor vehicle.

Police Chief: Focus on Reducing Violent Crime

New Mexico State Police Chief Troy Weisler said the crackdown highlights the agency’s focus on proactive patrols and partnerships to reduce violent crime across Albuquerque neighborhoods.
