Arizona Man Accused of Executing Girlfriend With Pillow Gun Before Dumping Her Body at Police Station “Like Roadkill,” Family Says

PHOENIX, ARIZONA — A 36-year-old Phoenix man is behind bars after police say he shot his girlfriend in the head with a gun he kept hidden under his pillow, wrapped her in a comforter, and dumped her dead body in the bed of his pickup truck before driving to a police station and confessing.

Gun Hidden Under Pillow Fell During the Night, Triggering a Fatal Fight

According to court documents, Josue Barreras Anaya and his girlfriend, 32-year-old Jessica Guzman, were asleep early Tuesday morning when a handgun Anaya kept tucked under his pillow slipped onto the floor.

The noise startled Guzman, sparking an argument. Anaya told investigators that when he picked up the weapon, Guzman tried to grab it, resulting in a struggle that produced two gunshots — one fatally striking her in the head.

But authorities say the story raises major concerns, especially given Guzman’s documented fears of Anaya and past allegations of abuse.

Her brother, David Guzman, told KTVK:

“He loaded up my sister in the back of his truck like it was roadkill.”

Suspect Wrapped Her Body, Loaded Her Into Truck Bed, and Drove to Police Station

Instead of calling 911, Anaya allegedly wrapped Guzman’s body in a comforter, carried her outside, and placed her into the bed of his GMC Sierra pickup.

At around 5 a.m., he drove to the Maryvale Estrella Mountain Precinct on Encanto Boulevard. Patrol officers were in the parking lot when Anaya approached and claimed there was a deceased woman in the back of his truck — and he was responsible.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Brian Bower said officers were stunned:

“You don’t expect someone to walk up and say there’s a deceased person in their truck and that they’re responsible.”

Officers immediately detained Anaya, processed his hands for gunshot residue, and attempted to question him before he requested an attorney.

Family Says They Tried to Warn Jessica for Months About His Abuse

Jessica’s family says they feared something like this would happen.

Her brother David said she told them Anaya had been abusive and isolating, refusing to let her maintain close contact with relatives.

“We all tried to wake her up and make her see the danger she was in,” he told reporters.
“He kept weaseling his way back into her life.”

Relatives described Guzman as a devoted mother whose life revolved around her young son.

A family-run GoFundMe wrote:

“Her son has lost the most important person in his life… her mother has lost her pillar.”

First-Degree Murder Charge; $1 Million Bond

Anaya has been charged with first-degree murder and remains in custody at the Maricopa County Jail on a $1 million bond.

Police say the investigation remains active as detectives continue to examine the scene, the weapon, and any prior domestic violence reports involving the couple.

Guzman leaves behind a young son and a grieving family seeking justice.
