Cass Street Bridge in Joliet to Close for Over a Year as Major Repairs Begin

JOLIET, ILLINOIS – Motorists in Joliet should prepare for major travel changes as the Cass Street Bridge in downtown is set to close for more than a year beginning in mid-September. The closure comes as part of a $22.8 million rehabilitation project led by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).

Ruby Street Bridge Reopens, Cass Street Shuts Down

The announcement followed news that the nearby Ruby Street Bridge over the Des Plaines River will reopen on Wednesday, September 10, weather permitting. However, shortly after Ruby Street returns to service, the Cass Street Bridge will be shut down for construction expected to last until late 2026.

Details of the Rehabilitation Project

According to IDOT, the Cass Street Bridge project will include:

  • Repairs to bridge decks and approaches
  • Replacement of expansion joints and structural steel
  • Electrical and mechanical system upgrades
  • Replacement of deteriorated sidewalks and curbs
  • Construction of new ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps

Since August 2024, the Cass Street Bridge has already been limited to one westbound lane with weight restrictions. Upon completion, IDOT says all three lanes will reopen with no posted weight limits, improving access and safety for motorists.

Detour Routes for Motorists

During the closure, Cass Street traffic will be detoured to nearby routes, including:

  • Scott Street (Illinois 53)
  • Ruby Street (Illinois 53)
  • Broadway Street (Illinois 53)
  • Theodore Street (Illinois 7)
  • Plainfield Road (U.S. 30)

Drivers should expect increased congestion on these alternate routes during peak travel hours.

Part of a Larger Downtown Bridge Upgrade

The Cass Street project is one phase of a larger effort to modernize Joliet’s movable bridges. IDOT has been upgrading control systems so that downtown bridges can be operated from a central location. This modernization is designed to make bridge lifts more efficient and improve safety for drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and marine traffic.

With Cass Street Bridge out of service until late 2026, Joliet residents and commuters will face significant adjustments. For continued updates on traffic changes and major infrastructure projects across Illinois, stay with ChicagoMusicGuide.com.
