LOS ANGELES, CA — Cleo Rose Elliott grew up around Hollywood royalty, with actor parents Sam Elliott and Katharine Ross and an early path that mixed music, modeling, and celebrity attention. But her public story changed dramatically in 2011, when a domestic argument with her mother turned violent and led to a restraining order.

The episode left a mark on a family that had long projected warmth and stability in public. In the years since, Ross and Elliott have occasionally appeared together, suggesting a reconciliation that followed one of the most unsettling celebrity family disputes in recent memory.

From Malibu childhood to a music career

Born in Malibu in 1984, Elliott was raised after her parents married that same year. She went to school in the area, later studied music and acting in Santa Monica, and worked a mix of modeling and reality TV jobs while developing her voice.

She eventually trained in classical opera and released her debut album, No More Lies, in 2008. Even with a formal music background, she leaned toward hard rock influences such as Guns N’ Roses and Led Zeppelin, and she described her songs as personal rather than tied to one specific relationship.

The 2011 fight that changed everything

According to court filings and later reporting, Ross said her daughter had been emotionally and verbally abusive since childhood and became more volatile in the early teen years. The conflict reached a breaking point on March 2, 2011, when Elliott allegedly threatened her mother during an argument inside their home.

Ross said Elliott cut a phone line with scissors, threatened her eyes, and stabbed her arm multiple times before police got involved. A temporary restraining order followed days later, requiring Elliott to stay away from Ross, her home, and her workplace until a hearing later that month.

A low profile, then a gradual public thaw

The restraining order was later dropped after neither woman appeared at a scheduled hearing, and Ross said afterward that the two were working on their relationship. Elliott then kept a very low profile, making far fewer public appearances and maintaining a private social media presence.

Still, she has occasionally reappeared alongside her famous parents, including at Hollywood events tied to Sam Elliott’s Oscar campaign for A Star Is Born and in a 2017 interview connected to Ross and Sam Elliott’s film The Hero. In that conversation, Elliott spoke warmly about both parents, a sign that the family had moved well past the worst of the crisis.
