Dane County Launches Death Investigation After Person Found Dead in Lake Monona
MADISON, WISCONSIN — Authorities in Dane County have launched a death investigation after a body was recovered from Lake Monona on Thursday afternoon. Emergency crews initially responded to reports of an unconscious person in the water, but the individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency Crews Respond to Afternoon Water Call
According to officials, deputies with the Dane County Marine and Trail Enforcement unit and Madison Fire and Rescue were dispatched shortly after 2 p.m. following a report of a person in distress near North Shore Drive.
First responders located the individual and brought the body to shore. Despite immediate efforts, the person was found unresponsive and declared deceased on-site.
Authorities have not released the individual’s name pending notification of next of kin.

Early reports indicated that the incident occurred on Lake Mendota, but the Dane County Sheriff’s Office later issued a clarification confirming that the body was recovered from Lake Monona.
