Eight Killed, 50 Injured in Chicago Weekend Shootings

CHICAGO, Illinois — A wave of gun violence over the Labor Day weekend left eight people dead and at least 50 others injured, according to Chicago police data.

Dozens Shot Across the City

Authorities said 58 people were shot in 37 separate incidents between Friday night, Aug. 29, and Monday night, Sept. 1.

Of the victims, eight were pronounced dead at the scene or at area hospitals. At least 50 others suffered gunshot injuries ranging from stable to critical condition.

Police confirmed suspects have been questioned in several incidents, but the majority of the shootings remain unsolved, with no arrests announced.

Federal Response and Trump’s Statement

The surge in violence drew renewed national attention. President Donald Trump addressed the shootings on Truth Social, promising to roll out new crime initiatives in Chicago, similar to measures recently announced for Washington, D.C.

“Chicago is by far the worst and most dangerous city in the world,” Trump wrote, urging Illinois Governor JB Pritzker to request federal assistance.

Trump has repeatedly criticized local governments in cities like Chicago, Washington, and New York, arguing that federal intervention is needed to restore safety and stability.

City Grapples With Ongoing Violence

Chicago has long battled issues of gun violence concentrated in certain neighborhoods. Community leaders say long-term solutions must address not only law enforcement but also poverty, youth outreach, and access to education and jobs.

Despite summer policing initiatives, weekends remain particularly violent periods, with large gatherings and conflicts often escalating into shootings.

The Labor Day weekend toll adds to mounting pressure on city leaders to find solutions that balance public safety with broader community investment.
