Family of Brookfield Man Found Dead Near Golf Course Demands Transparency as NAACP Raises Concerns Over Police Handling
BROOKFIELD, WISCONSIN — The family of 39-year-old Torrance Medley, along with representatives from the Waukesha and Milwaukee branches of the NAACP, is demanding answers from authorities after Medley was found dead near the Brookfield Hills Golf Course earlier this month. The family’s attorney alleges they have been “mistreated” by both the Waukesha County Medical Examiner’s Office and the City of Brookfield Police Department.
At a Friday news conference held near the site where Medley’s body was discovered, attorney William Sultan said the family has not received basic information that is typically provided in death investigations.
Attorney Claims Family “Mistreated” and Investigation Lacks Transparency
Sultan accused authorities of prematurely concluding the death was a suicide without completing a full forensic investigation.
“Regardless of what the ultimate conclusion is here, the family deserves to know what actually happened,” he said. “Death investigations are done by forensic pathologists, not by police officers.”
He added that the case touches on difficult historical trauma:
“We all know the negative relationship that Black men have with lynching in our country, and this is a big deal.”
According to the attorney, the family has not been shown surveillance video, injury details, or investigative findings.
NAACP: Community Shaken and Seeking Answers
Mantra Moore, first vice president of the Waukesha NAACP, said the local community is deeply concerned.
“I can honestly tell you that Waukesha cares. When a public tragedy such as this takes place, the community wants answers.”
Moore said the NAACP is acting as a bridge to ensure transparency and to help the family understand what happened.
Police Previously Released Preliminary Suicide Finding
Brookfield Police Chief Chris Garcia released a statement on November 23 describing the scene where Medley was found on November 13. According to the statement, Medley was discovered near a tree with a strap around his neck — a setup indicating asphyxiation using body weight.
Garcia said the initial findings suggested suicide, stating:
“We have no information at this point to indicate a crime was involved.”
The Medical Examiner’s Office completed an autopsy, and police reported no signs of trauma beyond asphyxiation. The statement also said Medley had been experiencing mental health challenges in the days before his death.
Family Insists Medley Would Not Have Gone to That Area
Sultan emphasized that the family does not believe Medley would have taken his own life, nor do they have any reason to believe he would have been in that location.
“The Medley family doesn’t have any reason to believe that Tory would commit suicide,” he said. “The family doesn’t have any reason to believe that Tory would come to Brookfield Hills Golf Course.”
Family Seeks Independent Review and Release of Evidence
The attorney and NAACP representatives are requesting:
- A meeting with investigators
- Access to surveillance video
- A full independent review of the death investigation
Attempts to reach the Brookfield Police Department and the Medical Examiner’s Office for comment on Friday were unsuccessful.
