Fedscreek Man Charged with Assaulting Nurses at Pikeville Medical Center
PIKEVILLE, KENTUCKY — A Pike County man has been arrested and charged with assault after he allegedly attacked three nurses at Pikeville Medical Center during the early morning hours of October 4, according to police reports.
Authorities identified the suspect as Delbert Miller II, 50, of Motley Fork, Fedscreek, who was taken into custody following a disturbance at the hospital’s emergency department.
Police Report Describes Violent Encounter in ER
According to a citation written by Pikeville Police Officer Bradyn Hunter, officers responded to a call from hospital security after Miller allegedly became aggressive with medical staff.
When Hunter arrived, he was met by security personnel and ER staff, who reported that Miller had assaulted three emergency room nurses and resisted attempts to restrain him.
“They advised that (Miller) had assaulted three ER nurses and had fought with security,” Hunter wrote in his report. “There were three nurses that had visible marks from (Miller) striking and grabbing hold of them.”
Police say all three nurses suffered visible injuries, though none were reported as life-threatening.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
Miller was arrested for third-degree assault on a healthcare provider, a Class D felony under Kentucky law. He was booked into the Pike County Detention Center and later released on a $2,000 full cash bond.
As part of his release conditions, Miller is barred from entering Pikeville Medical Center property for any reason other than a verified medical emergency.
Third-degree assault against healthcare workers is taken seriously under Kentucky law, carrying a potential prison sentence of one to five years if convicted.
Hospital and Community Response
The incident has drawn concern among local healthcare professionals, many of whom say violence against nurses is an ongoing issue in hospital emergency rooms across the state.
Pikeville Medical Center officials have not released a public statement but confirmed that security measures and staff support protocols were immediately enacted following the attack.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
