Former Murray High School Teacher Arrested on Sexual Abuse Charges Involving Student

MURRAY, KENTUCKY — A former Murray High School teacher has been arrested and charged with sexual abuse and third-degree rape after a former student came forward alleging a sexual relationship more than a decade ago.
Jason Shelby was taken into custody on September 10 and booked into the Calloway County Jail. He faces charges of first-degree sexual abuse and third-degree rape, according to the Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 1.
Allegations Dating Back Years
Authorities said the earliest misconduct allegations against Shelby trace back as far as 2005. However, the first official report to state police was made in August 2018 by the Kentucky Education Profession Standards Board, which cited possible sexual misconduct with at least two students.
Following that report, Shelby resigned from his teaching position in October 2018. At the time, investigators said there was not enough evidence to secure an arrest warrant.
Victim’s Report Leads to Arrest
The case was revived when a former student stepped forward last month, telling investigators she had a sexual relationship with Shelby when she was 15 and 16 years old, between 2008 and 2009.
With this testimony, detectives were able to obtain a warrant charging Shelby. Police arrested him on September 9, and he was booked the next day.
Ongoing Investigation
Detective William Propes of KSP Post 1 is continuing to investigate the case. Authorities urged anyone with additional information to come forward by calling 270-856-3721 or submitting an anonymous tip at kentuckystatepolice.ky.gov/tip.
The arrest has renewed attention on longstanding concerns about educator misconduct and the importance of early reporting. Officials say further charges could be possible as the investigation continues.
The case serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance in protecting students and ensuring accountability in educational institutions. For continued coverage on Kentucky investigations and public safety updates, visit ChicagoMusicGuide.com.
