Fort Atkinson Officer Placed on Leave After Fatal Shooting During Domestic Disturbance

FORT ATKINSON, WISCONSIN — A Fort Atkinson police officer has been placed on administrative leave following a deadly shooting that occurred Sunday evening during a domestic disturbance on Washington Street, officials confirmed.

According to a statement from the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ), the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is leading the inquiry into the officer-involved death.

Domestic Disturbance Turns Deadly

Police were dispatched around 5 p.m. Sunday to a home on the 600 block of Washington Street after reports of shots fired as part of a domestic dispute. Officers surrounded the residence, and during the standoff, one officer fired their weapon, striking a person inside.

A rifle not belonging to law enforcement was later found at the scene, investigators said.

The individual who was shot received immediate medical aid and was later airlifted to a hospital in Madison, where they were pronounced dead. No officers were injured during the incident.

Officer Wore Body Camera During Shooting

Officials confirmed that the officer involved was wearing a body camera at the time of the shooting, in line with department policy. The officer has been placed on leave pending the results of the ongoing investigation.

The DCI is being assisted by the Wisconsin State Patrol, Jefferson County Medical Examiner, Dane County Medical Examiner, and a crime response specialist from the DOJ.

Witnesses at the scene told local reporters they saw multiple squad cars and an ambulance outside the home Sunday evening. Authorities said there was no threat to the public following the incident.

State Investigation Underway

The Wisconsin DOJ will review all evidence, including body camera footage, officer statements, and forensic results, before submitting its findings to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office for review.

The name of the deceased individual has not yet been released.
