Georgia Mother Arrested After 11-Year-Old Found Stabbed, Cleaned and Propped Upright in Recliner

SANDY SPRINGS, GEORGIA — A Georgia mother has been arrested on multiple felony charges after police discovered her 11-year-old daughter stabbed to death and “cleaned and positioned” upright in a recliner inside their condominium. Authorities say the mother admitted responsibility, telling officers, “I happened.”

Police Discover Mother Bleeding, Daughter Propped Up in Chair

According to Sandy Springs Police, officers responded to a 911 call from the suspect’s sister on Nov. 14, after 42-year-old Shannen Grimes told her sibling she had attempted to take her own life. When police entered the home inside the Laurel Grove condominiums, they found Grimes lying on a couch with a serious wrist injury.

Nearby sat her daughter, Genesis, placed neatly upright in a reclining chair with a blanket draped over her legs. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Arrest warrants describe an eerie and disturbing scene.

“The child appeared to have been cleaned and positioned
in the recliner,” investigators wrote.

Officers also reported little to no blood visible on the girl, despite clear puncture wounds on her neck and shoulder.

Multiple Stab Wounds Found; Mother Says “I Happened”

Authorities say the girl suffered at least four puncture wounds, and evidence suggested she had been washed before being placed in the chair.

When officers asked Grimes what happened, her response was chilling:

“I happened,”
she allegedly told police.

While being transported in an ambulance for medical treatment, Grimes reportedly admitted she stabbed her daughter in the neck.

Blood and Cleanup Materials Found Throughout the Home

Investigators uncovered extensive cleanup efforts inside the condo. Blood trails and soaked materials were discovered in multiple rooms, along with items used to wipe or collect blood.

Police found:

  • Blood-soaked paper towels
  • Trash cans and a bucket containing bloody water
  • Knives stained with blood near the kitchen sink
  • Blood-covered clothing and bedding hidden in a box
  • A shirt with holes around the victim’s neck and shoulder area, consistent with the stabbing

Detectives say the scene indicated significant effort to clean, conceal, and organize the aftermath of the killing.

Charges Include Murder, Child Cruelty, and Tampering With Evidence

Grimes has been charged with:

  • Two counts of murder
  • Cruelty to children
  • Possession of a firearm or knife during a felony
  • Tampering with evidence

Police say the mother was hospitalized for self-inflicted injuries before being transferred to the Fulton County Jail, where she is now held without bond.

Authorities have not yet released information regarding a possible motive, but detectives say the investigation is ongoing.

Community in Shock as Investigation Continues

Residents of the quiet Sandy Springs condominium complex say they are stunned by the brutality of the case and the disturbing details revealed in warrants.

Investigators described the scene as one of the most unsettling they have encountered, given the victim’s age, the positioning of the body, and the mother’s calm demeanor during questioning.

As the case proceeds, the community continues to mourn the life of 11-year-old Genesis, whose death stands as another tragic reminder of the vulnerability of children within their own homes.
