Guatemalan Woman Sentenced in Cedar Rapids for Using Fake Social Security Card

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA – A 35-year-old Guatemalan woman has been sentenced in federal court after admitting to using a fraudulent social security card to gain employment in eastern Iowa.
Charges and Guilty Plea
Court officials said Cindy Santos-Perez, a citizen of Guatemala, pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful use of an identification document. Prosecutors revealed she used the false card on multiple occasions between December 2020 and May 2022 to obtain work authorization.
In one instance, court records show she used a fake social security number as her account number in an effort to mislead authorities in May 2022.
Sentencing Details
On Thursday, Santos-Perez was sentenced to 109 days in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
The case highlights ongoing concerns over fraudulent documentation used in employment and immigration contexts.
Broader Context
While her sentence is relatively short, Santos-Perez’s case underscores how federal authorities are continuing to prosecute document fraud cases tied to employment. Similar prosecutions in Iowa and across the Midwest have focused on workers using false identification documents to gain jobs in manufacturing, agriculture, and service industries.
