Illinois Route 161 Extension to Close for Railroad Repairs on Monday and Tuesday

ILLINOIS — The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced that the Illinois Route 161 Extension will be closed on Monday and Tuesday between Heinzmann Road and State Route 37 to allow railroad crossing repairs by Union Pacific.

Details of the Closure

The full closure is being implemented to allow crews to rehabilitate the Union Pacific Railroad crossing. Motorists traveling through this part of southern Illinois should plan for detours and possible delays.

“The closure is necessary to complete needed rehabilitation work at the crossing,” IDOT officials explained in their notice.

Posted Detours and Driver Advisory

A posted detour route will guide motorists around the work zone, though IDOT notes drivers may also choose to plan alternate routes in advance. The temporary detour is designed to minimize disruptions while keeping traffic flowing.

“Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area,” IDOT stated.

Safety Guidance for Motorists

IDOT reminded drivers to use caution while traveling near construction sites and detours. Officials urged drivers to:

  • Watch for detour signage in work zones
  • Obey posted speed limits
  • Avoid using mobile devices while driving
  • Stay alert for workers and equipment

“We ask all drivers to stay alert and cautious to ensure the safety of both motorists and crews,” officials added.

The two-day closure is part of ongoing maintenance to improve railroad infrastructure and roadway safety. For more Illinois travel updates and community news, visit ChicagoMusicGuide.com.
