Indiana Teacher Arrested After Students Eat THC Gummies Left “Out in the Open” in Classroom, Police Say

ANGOLA, INDIANA — An Indiana high school teacher is facing felony charges after two students mistakenly consumed THC-infused gummies she allegedly left “out in the open” inside her classroom. The students believed they were eating regular candy when the incident occurred during the final class period on Thursday, according to investigators.

Students Ate THC Gummies Left in Classroom, Deputies Say

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office began investigating Friday morning after the school resource deputy at Angola High School learned about two students who became ill after consuming the gummies.

According to deputies, the students had no idea the candy contained THC.

Investigators wrote:

“The preliminary investigation indicated that the two students were unaware the candy they ate contained THC. The candy was located inside the classroom out in the open.”

Both students were evaluated by school personnel, and authorities were notified immediately.

Teacher Identified as Debra McGillem; Suspected THC Found on Her

Further investigation revealed the gummies were brought into the school by 49-year-old Debra McGillem, a language arts teacher listed on the school district’s website. McGillem lives in Reading, Michigan, approximately 25 miles from the school.

Deputies located additional suspected THC gummies on her person. Authorities said McGillem appeared impaired and determined she had been operating a vehicle under the influence when she arrived at school.

She was taken into custody shortly after.

McGillem Faces Multiple Felony Charges

Police announced the following charges against McGillem:

  • Neglect of a dependent — Level 6 felony
  • Possession of a controlled substance on school property — Level 6 felony
  • Operating while intoxicated — Misdemeanor

Authorities also notified the Indiana Department of Child Services due to the nature of the incident.

McGillem was booked into the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office on a $6,500 bond, where she remained in custody as of Saturday morning.

School District Launches Internal Investigation

The Metropolitan School District of Steuben County (MSDSC) addressed the arrest in a message to parents, confirming the district has launched its own review.

Superintendent Matthew L. Widenhoefer said:

“The district has initiated an internal investigation, and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with district policy and applicable law.”

The district did not say whether McGillem has been suspended or removed from classroom duties pending further investigation.
