Kansas Man Convicted of Ambushing and Killing Estranged Wife During Divorce

KANSAS CITY, KANSAS – A 35-year-old man has been convicted of first-degree premeditated murder after waiting on the porch of his estranged wife’s home and shooting her dead when she returned from running errands, authorities announced this week.

Ambush Outside Friend’s Home

Prosecutors say Miguel Flores killed his 23-year-old wife, Loren Flores, on November 21, 2022, as the couple was in the process of a divorce. Loren had been staying at a friend’s home on South 52nd Terrace and Metropolitan Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas, while separating from her husband.

According to court documents, Flores arrived at the home, parked nearby, and waited on the front porch for her to return. When Loren arrived, a witness told police that she appeared visibly nervous and handed over her phone, instructing them to call 911 if he tried to attack her.

Moments later, an argument erupted, followed by the sound of multiple gunshots. Loren was pronounced dead at the scene.

Confrontation and Arrest

After the shooting, Flores fled in a red Dodge Challenger, driving to a relative’s home elsewhere in the city. The witness at the scene alerted authorities, providing the suspect’s name and vehicle description.

When officers arrived at the relative’s residence, Flores allegedly pointed a Glock 10mm handgun—the same weapon used in the killing—at officers from behind his vehicle. Despite repeated commands to drop the gun, he initially refused, prompting a brief standoff before surrendering.

Police later confirmed that the weapon recovered matched the shell casings found at the murder scene.

Conviction and Next Steps

Following a two-day jury trial that began on October 6, Flores was found guilty on all counts, including first-degree murder and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

Sentencing has not yet been scheduled, but prosecutors said the first-degree murder conviction could result in a life sentence without parole eligibility for 25 years under Kansas law.

The Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Office praised the work of investigators and expressed condolences to the victim’s family.
