Kentucky AG Hails First Jury Verdict From Violent Crime Reduction Team
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman announced Wednesday the first jury verdict secured by the Violent Crime Reduction Team, marking a milestone for the unit created in late 2024 to address violent offenses in Louisville.
Jury Conviction and Sentencing
The verdict centered on Jacob Burnett, 42, who was convicted Tuesday in Jefferson County of third-degree assault and classified as a first-degree persistent felony offender. Burnett, already jailed while awaiting trial on a 2020 Louisville murder charge, assaulted a corrections officer inside Louisville Metro Department of Corrections (LMDC).
On Wednesday, he was sentenced to 17 years in prison.
Attorney General’s Response
In a statement, Coleman praised the outcome as a step toward greater safety in Louisville.
“Louisville’s violent criminals are facing the justice they deserve, and today’s jury verdict will make this community safer for the families who live here,” Coleman said. He credited collaboration between the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) and the Jefferson Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office for the successful prosecution.
Team’s Progress Since Launch
The Violent Crime Reduction Team, established in October 2024, has been active for less than a year but has already built a significant track record. According to the Attorney General’s Office, the team has secured nearly 80 felony indictments and eight convictions to date.
The first conviction came on May 7, 2025, when Demarcus Allen pleaded guilty to possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and was sentenced to five years in prison.
Community Impact
Coleman emphasized that the team’s mission is to hold repeat violent offenders accountable, reducing the risks for families across Kentucky. By strengthening cooperation with local law enforcement and prosecutors, the initiative aims to continue pressing forward on cases that bring meaningful impact to public safety.
The first jury verdict for the Violent Crime Reduction Team underscores Kentucky’s heightened push to confront violent crime in Louisville and beyond. For more state and community updates, follow ChicagoMusicGuide.com.
