Kentucky Driver Arrested After Police Find Meth-Loaded Needle During Late-Night Traffic Stop
LONDON, KENTUCKY — A late-night traffic stop in Laurel County ended with a London man in custody after officers said they discovered a meth-filled needle in his pocket and learned he was driving on a suspended license with an active parole warrant.
Police Say Vehicle Was Crossing Double Yellow Lines
According to the London Police Department, officers pulled over a red Chevrolet around 9:19 p.m. on Friday after the driver repeatedly crossed the double yellow line and turned without using a signal.
The driver, identified as 30-year-old Derek Mullins, reportedly told officers he had no proof of insurance and was operating on a suspended license.
A records check confirmed the suspension stemmed from a third-offense DUI, and officers also learned Mullins was wanted on an active parole warrant.
Needle Containing Methamphetamine Found in Driver’s Pocket
When asked to step out of the vehicle, officers said Mullins warned them he had a needle in his pocket. Police searched him and found a loaded needle containing a substance suspected to be methamphetamine.
After conducting field sobriety tests, officers placed Mullins under arrest.
“During the search, a needle filled with a suspected methamphetamine substance was recovered,” police noted in their report.
Multiple Charges Filed; Parole Warrant Served
Mullins was taken to the Laurel County Detention Center, where police served his outstanding parole warrant in addition to new drug and traffic-related charges.
The full list of charges has not yet been released, but officers said the case involves:
- Drug possession
- Driving on a suspended license
- Failure to signal
- Failure to maintain proper lane control
- No proof of insurance
Authorities say additional charges may be filed depending on lab results.
