Kentucky Man Dies After Exchanging Gunfire With Deputies Following High-Speed Chase, Police Say
NELSON COUNTY, KENTUCKY — A 37-year-old Bardstown man died Monday afternoon after a vehicle chase and exchange of gunfire with Nelson County sheriff’s deputies, according to the Kentucky State Police (KSP).
Authorities identified the man as Terry Carney Jr., who allegedly fired his weapon after a pursuit that began when deputies responded to reports of shots fired at his father’s home.
Father’s 911 Call Leads to Deadly Pursuit
Around 3:45 p.m. Monday, dispatchers received a 911 call from Carney’s father, who reported that his son was at his home “firing a weapon in a threatening manner.” Deputies located Carney shortly after the call, but when they attempted to stop his vehicle, he rammed a deputy’s cruiser with his pickup truck and fled the scene.
According to KSP, one officer fired at Carney’s vehicle during the collision. The pursuit continued until Carney drove off the roadway along the 400 block of Woodlawn Road and began firing his gun.
Man Found Dead After Gunfire Exchange
State police said deputies returned fire, though it remains unclear whether any of their shots struck Carney. A report from WDRB News indicated Carney died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
No deputies were injured in the confrontation, and an autopsy will be conducted by the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office in Louisville to confirm the cause of death.
State Police Conducting Standard Investigation
The incident is now under review by the KSP Critical Incident Response Team, which investigates all officer-involved shootings in the state. Officials said the agency will not release additional information until all witnesses have been interviewed and relevant evidence collected.
“To protect the integrity of an ongoing investigation, it is KSP’s standard operating procedure not to release specific details until vital witnesses have been interviewed and pertinent facts gathered,” the agency said in a statement.
Kentucky State Police reiterated their commitment to transparency as the investigation continues. For updates on law enforcement and community safety news across Kentucky, visit ChicagoMusicGuide.com.
