Kentucky Mother Pleads Guilty After Infant Son Drowned in Louisville Motel Bathtub on New Year’s Day

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY — A Louisville mother has pleaded guilty to manslaughter nearly a year after her 3-month-old baby drowned in a motel bathtub on New Year’s Day. Amber Winstead, 36, entered her guilty plea on October 31, according to court records cited by WDRB.

The fatal incident occurred inside a Louisville motel, where Winstead reportedly fell asleep in the tub while under the influence of drugs, leaving her infant submerged and unresponsive.

Mother Admitted to Using Drugs Before Falling Asleep With Baby

According to investigators, Winstead told authorities she had taken drugs earlier that day. While bathing with her baby, she said she fell asleep for several hours. When she awoke, the 3-month-old was submerged in the water and had drowned.

Emergency responders pronounced the infant dead at the scene.

Defense Says Winstead Is Completing Drug Treatment

Following her plea, Winstead’s attorney told the court his client is nearing the completion of a drug-treatment program. He has requested that she be placed on house arrest while awaiting sentencing.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for December, though the exact date has not been disclosed.

Case Highlights Ongoing Concerns About Substance Abuse and Child Safety

The tragic drowning has renewed attention on the dangers of substance use around infants, especially in unstable living conditions such as hotels and motels. Louisville authorities have not announced whether additional charges or investigations are pending.

Winstead remains out of custody while the court considers her attorney’s request.
