Kentucky Search for Missing Child Turns Dangerous as Two Men Arrested for Laser and Gunfire Attack on Police Helicopter

MAYSLICK, KY – What began as an urgent search for a missing 11-year-old child quickly escalated into a dangerously hostile situation when a Kentucky State Police helicopter was struck multiple times by a high-powered laser and gunfire. Authorities arrested two men accused of targeting the aircraft during the nighttime search operation.

Helicopter Crew Hit by Laser While Searching for Missing Child

Kentucky State Police said the incident happened on November 3 while troopers and the Aircraft Support Branch were assisting in the effort to find a missing juvenile in Robertson County. As the helicopter circled over the Mayslick area, the pilot and tactical flight officer were repeatedly hit with a laser beam coming from the ground.

Investigators said the tactical flight officer may have suffered eye injuries from the direct strikes. Laser exposure can temporarily blind or disorient pilots, creating the possibility of a catastrophic crash.

Gunfire Reportedly Aimed at the Aircraft

Along with the laser attacks, police said someone on the ground also fired several rounds toward the helicopter. No one aboard the aircraft was hit, but officials described the situation as extremely dangerous for both the crew and anyone on the ground below.

Troopers emphasized that attacks on aircraft—especially during active missing-child searches—pose severe risks and can interfere with emergency operations when every second counts.

Two Suspects Arrested After Coordinated Search

Through combined efforts of air support and troopers on the ground, officers located the suspects at a home in the 4100 block of U.S. 62 near Mayslick.

The two men arrested were identified as:

Jason L. McKee, 49, of Mayslick

  • Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree (Police Officer)
  • Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree (Discharge of Firearm)
  • Laser/Vision Interference Light Directed at Aircraft With Disrupted Travel

Donald W. Boone, 55, of Aberdeen, Ohio

  • Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree (Police Officer)

Both were booked into the Mason County Detention Center. The FBI has been notified and may pursue additional federal charges.

Investigation Still Active

Troopers say the case remains ongoing as detectives continue reviewing evidence from the scene. The missing child investigation, which prompted the helicopter deployment, was not affected by the arrests.

KSP officials underscored that laser and firearm attacks on aircraft are serious offenses that jeopardize lives and will be prosecuted aggressively.
