Kentucky State Police Announce New Round of Traffic Safety Checkpoints Across Five Eastern Counties

HAZARD, KY — Drivers traveling through eastern Kentucky this month should expect to see increased police presence as the Kentucky State Police Post 13 prepares to launch a new series of traffic safety checkpoints. Officials say the checkpoints are designed to improve roadway safety across Perry, Knott, Letcher, Breathitt, and Leslie counties.

State Police Announce December Traffic Enforcement Efforts

In a notice issued December 1, KSP said the upcoming checkpoints are authorized under the agency’s Policy and Procedures Manual and will take place at various times throughout the month.

Troopers will use these checkpoints to enforce traffic laws, monitor impaired driving, ensure proper seat belt usage, and identify drivers operating vehicles without valid licenses, insurance, or registration.

Goal: Increase Safety and Deter Violations

According to state police, the checkpoint program serves two purposes:

  • Keeping roadways safe for all motorists
  • Deterring violations of Kentucky law, including DUI, speeding, and equipment violations

KSP emphasized that the effort is part of a long-running statewide initiative to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities on rural and urban roadways.

Motorists Encouraged to Drive Responsibly

Drivers in the affected counties are encouraged to stay alert, follow posted traffic laws, and ensure their vehicles meet state safety requirements. Police note that checkpoints will be clearly marked and staffed by uniformed troopers for visibility and public awareness.

Residents seeking more information on checkpoint locations or general traffic safety guidance can contact Kentucky State Police Post 13.
