Kentucky State Police Investigate Deadly Shooting After Armed Suspect Fires at Deputies in Nelson County
BARDSTOWN, KENTUCKY — The Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that took place Monday afternoon in Nelson County, after a domestic call escalated into a vehicle pursuit and gunfire exchange.
According to state police, the incident began around 3:45 p.m. EST when a man called 911 to report that his son was “firing a weapon in a threatening manner” at his home. The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Terry Carney Jr. of Bardstown, fled the scene in his truck before deputies arrived.
Suspect Rammed Deputy’s Cruiser, Fired at Officers
A short time later, Nelson County Sheriff’s deputies located Carney and attempted a traffic stop. Police said Carney rammed a deputy’s cruiser with his truck, prompting an officer to fire at the vehicle.
Carney then fled, leading deputies on a pursuit that ended near the 400 block of Woodlawn Road, where his truck went off the roadway. Officials said Carney exited the vehicle armed with a firearm and opened fire on deputies. Officers returned fire, striking Carney, who was later pronounced dead at the scene.
No officers were injured during the exchange.
Autopsy and Investigation Underway
An autopsy will be performed by the Office of the State Medical Examiner in Louisville. The investigation remains active, led by the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team, which is responsible for reviewing all officer-involved shootings statewide.
In a statement, KSP emphasized its commitment to transparency and thoroughness, noting that details will be released only after key witnesses are interviewed and all evidence is reviewed.
“To protect the integrity of an ongoing investigation, KSP does not release specific details until vital witnesses have been interviewed and pertinent facts gathered,” the agency said.
The Kentucky State Police will continue coordinating with the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office as the investigation progresses.
