LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) staged a dramatic demonstration Wednesday morning, crushing a confiscated 2021 Dodge Hellcat Durango worth an estimated $100,000 to highlight its ongoing crackdown on illegal street racing and street takeovers.

Vehicle Filled With Stolen Parts

Police said the bright green SUV, which had been seized during a previous investigation, was not street legal and contained multiple stolen parts. Rather than auction the vehicle, authorities opted to destroy it publicly to send a strong message to those involved in illegal street racing.

Mayor Craig Greenberg pressed the button that triggered the industrial crusher, flattening the high-powered SUV in front of cameras.

Record Number of Seizures

According to LMPD, the department confiscated more street racing vehicles in 2024 than any previous year, underscoring the growing problem in Louisville. Street racing and takeover events have been linked to serious crashes, injuries, and deaths, prompting law enforcement to escalate its enforcement efforts.
