Louisville Police Officer Fatally Shoots Armed Man After Responding to Early Morning Shooting in Newburg
LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY — A Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) officer shot and killed an armed man early Monday morning after responding to a separate shooting incident that left a woman critically injured in the city’s Newburg neighborhood, officials said.
According to Assistant Chief Emily McKinley, the shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Ridgecrest Road near Rosette Boulevard, where officers were dispatched after receiving reports of gunfire.
Police Say Man Pointed Gun at Officers
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a woman suffering from gunshot wounds. Before they could render aid, a man carrying a gun reportedly approached them.
McKinley said officers ordered the man to drop his weapon, but he continued walking toward them and pointed the gun in their direction. One of the responding officers then fired, striking the suspect.
Both the man and woman were taken to UofL Health Hospital, where the man later died from his injuries. The woman remains in critical condition, police confirmed.
Investigation and Bodycam Review Underway
LMPD’s Public Integrity Unit has launched a full investigation into the officer-involved shooting. McKinley said the incident was captured on body-worn cameras, which will be released within ten days in accordance with department policy.
“This incident shows the daily dangers that our officers face,” McKinley said, expressing gratitude that no officers or bystanders were hurt.
The names of the officer and the deceased man have not yet been released.
Newburg Community Reacts to Latest Police Shooting
The Newburg area has seen multiple police responses in recent months tied to shootings and violent crime. Community leaders say they are urging residents to remain calm and allow investigators to complete their review before drawing conclusions.
Officials with LMPD said counseling services will be made available to the officers involved as the department’s standard post-incident protocol.
