Madison Man Arrested After Threatening to Blow Up Wisconsin State Capitol Building, Police Say

MADISON, Wisconsin — A man is in custody after allegedly calling 911 to threaten blowing up the Wisconsin State Capitol building, police confirmed this week.

The incident unfolded on the night of September 22 when Madison police received the call around 8:41 p.m. Authorities say the suspect repeated the threat in person when officers arrived near University Avenue and Breese Terrace, prompting his immediate arrest.

He was booked into the Dane County Jail on tentative charges of making terrorist threats and parole violation. As of September 29, he remained in custody pending formal charges.

Political Climate Heightens Security Concerns

The arrest comes amid a year of heightened political violence across the country. In June 2025, Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman was assassinated at her home, and investigators later discovered that 11 Wisconsin Democratic legislators were named in a manifesto linked to the suspect.

Just this month, Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk was killed during an event in Utah, further intensifying conversations about political security nationwide.

Wisconsin Leaders Weigh Security Measures

Following these incidents, Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said while he does not want to “fortify” the State Capitol, lawmakers are exploring ways to bolster security, particularly at the homes of officeholders.

The Wisconsin Capitol has faced prior threats as well. In 2023, a man twice brought firearms into the building while demanding to see Governor Tony Evers. He later pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor.

The Capitol threat underscores ongoing concerns about political safety in Wisconsin and nationwide. Prosecutors are expected to review the case for formal charges in the coming days.
