Madison Man Arrested for 3rd OWI After Botched Escape Attempt Ends With Flat Tires

MADISON, WISCONSIN — A 40-year-old Madison man is facing multiple charges after a failed attempt to escape police ended with all four of his tires deflated and a short chase on foot early Thursday morning, according to the Madison Police Department.

Traffic Stop Turns Into Short Pursuit

Police said the incident began around 1:25 a.m. when officers pulled over a speeding vehicle. The driver, identified as Barry Harrison, refused to cooperate with officers and ignored repeated commands to exit the car.

As backup units and a sergeant arrived, officers deployed tire deflation devices to prevent Harrison from driving away. Despite this, he attempted to flee — but didn’t get far.

“He was unable to get very far as all four of his tires were deflated,” police said.

Harrison then jumped out of the vehicle and tried to run through a nearby neighborhood, but officers quickly caught him about 0.4 miles away from the original traffic stop.

Drugs and Open Alcohol Found Inside Vehicle

Upon searching Harrison’s vehicle, police discovered MDMA, marijuana, and open alcohol containers. He was immediately taken into custody without further incident.

Harrison now faces multiple charges, including:

  • 3rd offense OWI (Operating While Intoxicated)
  • Possession of MDMA and THC
  • Fleeing and resisting an officer

Ongoing Enforcement Against Repeat OWI Offenders

Police say the arrest is part of ongoing efforts to crack down on impaired driving and repeat OWI offenders across Madison and Dane County.

Harrison remains booked at the Dane County Jail, and his case will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office for formal charging.
