Madison Police Detain Person of Interest After Late-Night Shooting Near Whitney Way

MADISON, WISCONSIN – A late-night shooting on Madison’s west side left one person hospitalized Sunday, prompting a large police response and a follow-up SWAT search the next day. Madison Police say the attack appears to have been targeted, not random.

Victim Found Near Whitney Way With Non-Life-Threatening Gunshot Wound

Police were called just after 10 p.m. to the 600 block of South Whitney Way, near the Taco Bell, where they found a victim suffering from a gunshot wound.
Madison Fire Department paramedics provided immediate medical care before taking the victim to a local hospital.

Authorities confirmed the victim’s injuries were not life-threatening.

Investigators spoke with multiple witnesses at the scene while officers searched surrounding businesses and residential areas for evidence.

SWAT Team Executes Search Warrant; Person of Interest Taken Into Custody

By Monday afternoon, Madison Police’s Violent Crime Unit and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team executed a search warrant in the 700 block of Whitney Way.

Around 1:40 p.m., officers detained a person of interest on a Department of Corrections hold.

Police say early evidence suggests the shooting was not random, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Investigation Continues as Detectives Review Footage and Witness Statements

Officers are now reviewing security video from nearby businesses and speaking with additional witnesses who may have seen the shooter or a getaway vehicle.

Detectives are urging anyone with footage, social media posts, or firsthand information to come forward, noting that even small details could help lead to an arrest.
