Madison Police Investigating Targeted Shooting That Left One Person Hurt on City’s East Side
MADISON, WISCONSIN — Police are investigating a broad-daylight shooting that left one person injured Tuesday afternoon on Madison’s east side, describing the incident as targeted and not random.
According to Captain Ed Marshall of the Madison Police Department, officers responded around 3:15 p.m. after Dane County Dispatch received reports of multiple gunshots near Trafalger Place and Kurt Drive.
When officers arrived, they found a heavily damaged vehicle at the scene and one person hurt from the gunfire. The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police confirmed.
Neighbors Describe Hearing Gunfire
Residents in the area reported hearing a series of rapid gunshots just moments before police swarmed the neighborhood.
“I was in the backyard and heard, ‘pow, pow, pow, pow.’ I thought that didn’t sound like fireworks,” said Mark, a neighbor who lives a few doors down. “When I came out front, I saw the SUV with its lights on and realized it was serious.”
Officers blocked off the area for several hours Tuesday evening while collecting shell casings and shattered glass. At least 17 evidence markers were placed along the street.
Around 6 p.m., a car with bullet holes in the driver’s side window and another shattered window was towed from the scene as part of the investigation.
Police Say Shooting Was Targeted
Police believe the individuals involved knew each other, stressing that there is no ongoing danger to the public.
“The incident that we’re investigating was a targeted one,” said Captain Marshall. “To the best of our knowledge right now, the individuals involved did know each other.”
Investigators also confirmed that a crash on Milwaukee Street, just two blocks from the shooting scene, was connected to the incident, though the exact circumstances remain under review.
Extra Patrols and Community Reassurance
Marshall said police will increase patrols in the area to help reassure residents and provide peace of mind after the violent afternoon.
“We will be providing extra patrols from the district to help the neighborhood recover from what they had to witness,” he added.
As of Wednesday morning, no arrests have been made, and police are still seeking witnesses or video footage that could help identify other vehicles involved in the shooting.
