Monona Tow Truck Driver Arrested After Chaotic Chase That Injured Madison Police Officer
MONONA, Wisconsin — A reckless driving report involving a tow truck escalated into a dangerous police pursuit Saturday evening, ending in a crash that left a Madison police officer seriously injured.
Authorities identified the suspect as 36-year-old Christopher P. Brugger of Madison, who allegedly endangered multiple drivers before fleeing law enforcement.
How the Chase Began
Police first spotted the tow truck at a BP gas station on East Broadway after responding to reckless driving complaints along Highway 51. As officers approached, Brugger allegedly fled, sparking a chase that weaved through Monona Drive, Broadway, and several parking lots.
During the pursuit, the flatbed tow truck lost a sedan it was carrying, which slid onto the roadway. The truck then struck another object on Highway 51, raising further danger for passing motorists.
Crash With Squad Car
The chase came to an end on Terminal Drive, when Brugger’s truck collided with a Madison police squad car. The officer inside suffered serious injuries and was transported to the hospital.
Brugger attempted to flee the scene on foot but was quickly apprehended by pursuing officers.
Charges and Investigation
Brugger now faces several charges, including:
- Felony eluding
- Reckless driving
- Resisting an officer
- Additional traffic violations pending review
The Dane County Sheriff’s Office and Wisconsin State Patrol are investigating the squad car crash as the injured officer continues recovery.
