“Move Over, Pizza Rat!”: Texas Homeowner Catches Hilarious ‘Porch Pirate’ Opossum Stealing DoorDash Order on Camera
AUSTIN, TEXAS – A Texas homeowner expecting a late-night DoorDash delivery was stunned to find that their “porch pirate” wasn’t human at all — but a hungry opossum caught red-pawed on camera walking off with their dinner.
The “Possum Heist” Caught on Video
According to a post on Reddit’s r/Austin, the victim, user ToeCutterATX, said they were waiting for food from P. Terry’s Burger Stand when their home security camera caught a bald-tailed intruder creeping up to the front door.
The furry thief, later nicknamed the “Porch Pirate Possum,” carefully approached the bag, sniffed it, and — in a move worthy of a Mission Impossible remake — grabbed the food and dragged it off the porch.
“I didn’t even see it live,” the user wrote. “Just watched my camera playback later. The thing crept up like it owned the place.”
The animal then disappeared into the night, bag in tow, never to be seen again.
Internet Declares a New Food Heist Legend
The video quickly went viral after another Redditor joked, “Move over, Pizza Rat.”
The reference nods to the infamous 2015 New York City clip of a rat dragging an entire pizza slice down subway stairs — but this time, Texas has its own viral food bandit.
One commenter wrote,
“That possum wasn’t stealing. He was just claiming what the universe delivered to him.”
Another added,
“I wouldn’t even be mad — hangry, maybe, but not mad.”
Wildlife Experts Say Opossums Aren’t Villains
Amid the laughs, some users reminded others that opossums are misunderstood creatures that actually help ecosystems by eating ticks, roaches, and rats, and rarely carry rabies.
“They’re gentle scavengers, not dangerous pests,” one Redditor noted.
Animal control officials confirmed that no action was taken, since the “suspect” was a wild animal. The homeowner, meanwhile, says they’re now keeping food deliveries inside faster — just in case the possum returns for round two.
