Neurodivergent Indiana Man Attacked, Recorded While Returning Home From Work

HAMMOND, Indiana — A 44-year-old neurodivergent man from Hammond is recovering after he was brutally beaten and recorded by a group of individuals while riding his bicycle home from work.
Assault in Hessville Park
The victim, identified as Scott Lindsey, was attacked on August 15 while cutting through Hessville Park on his way back from his job at a local grocery store, where he has worked for 14 years.
Lindsey said the group accused him of following too closely before surrounding him at a water fountain. They allegedly taunted him with names before taking turns punching, kicking, and beating him.
“I didn’t say anything to them,” Lindsey recalled.
Violence Recorded and Shared Online
A witness eventually called 911, but by the time officers arrived, the attackers had fled, leaving Lindsey bloodied with most of his front teeth knocked out.
Lindsey’s stepfather expressed outrage, saying one of the assailants recorded the assault and posted it on social media.
“It looks like at this point it was entertainment because they said he was vulnerable. After a period of time, other individuals — instead of intervening — joined in the attack, and no one intervened on Scott’s behalf,” he told reporters.
Family Struggles With Aftermath
Lindsey lives with his aunt and is now facing costly dental procedures to repair the damage to his mouth. His family says the assault has not only caused physical injuries but left him emotionally shaken.
Lindsey told reporters he no longer plans to cut through the park on his commute, hoping to avoid reliving the trauma.
The Hammond Police Department continues to investigate the attack, while Lindsey’s family and community members call for accountability and justice for the brutal assault.
