New Jersey Wildfire 90% Contained in Passaic County, Smoke Still Expected

WEST MILFORD, N.J. — Fire crews have contained 90% of the Buckabear Wildfire in northern New Jersey after days of battling the blaze in Passaic County. While progress has been made, officials warn that lingering smoke could remain in the area until significant rainfall arrives.

Progress on the Buckabear Wildfire

The wildfire, first spotted on September 2 by the Milton Fire Tower, spread across 200 acres in West Milford Township before fire teams managed to establish containment lines.

“By Saturday evening, we reached 90% containment on the Buckabear Wildfire,” the New Jersey Forest Fire Service confirmed in an official update.

Although much of the blaze is under control, fire crews and engines remain in the area to monitor hot spots and ensure containment holds.

Closures and Safety Measures

Officials confirmed that no structures were damaged during the wildfire, but several closures remain in place.

  • Clinton Road is closed between Goldfinch Lane and Van Orden Road
  • The Clinton Reservoir Boat Launch also remains closed

“These closures are necessary as crews continue work in the affected areas,” fire service officials stated.

Residents were also reminded of safety rules, particularly the prohibition of drones in fire zones.

“Drones are not allowed near active wildfires, as they interfere with firefighting aircraft,” officials emphasized.

Lingering Smoke and Ongoing Risks

Despite progress, officials cautioned that smoke may persist in the region until heavy rainfall helps fully extinguish hot spots.

“While we’ve made substantial progress, smoke is likely to continue until we receive significant rainfall,” the Forest Fire Service advised.

The cause of the wildfire remains under investigation, and this is expected to be the final update from officials unless new developments occur.
