New Mexico Man Shoots Mother 11 Times After She Told Him To Go To Sleep for ‘Acting Crazy,’ Police Say

SANTA TERESA, NEW MEXICO — A 20-year-old man is behind bars after allegedly shooting his mother 11 times in the middle of the night — moments after she told him to go to sleep because he was “acting crazy.”

The suspect, identified as Kevin Marin, has been charged with aggravated battery against a family member and attempted second-degree murder, according to Doña Ana County court records.

Authorities say the shocking incident unfolded around 3 a.m. Monday inside a family home near Santa Teresa Elementary School, just northwest of El Paso, Texas, along the U.S.–Mexico border.

Late-Night Argument Turns Violent

According to police, Marin’s brother and mother were both home that night when the situation spiraled out of control.

The brother told investigators that Marin had been “screaming” and behaving erratically. Both he and their mother repeatedly told Marin to go to bed and calm down.

“She told him he was acting crazy,” investigators wrote in court documents.

The mother reportedly brought Marin to his room and stayed with him for a short while. But within minutes, the peaceful suburban home turned into a scene of chaos.

Around 3 a.m., Marin’s brother heard a burst of gunfire. When he rushed to the room, he found their mother bleeding heavily on the floor — shot 11 times with what police say was a semi-automatic rifle or carbine.

Mother Hospitalized, Son Arrested at the Scene

The brother quickly rushed his mother to a nearby hospital, where doctors listed her condition as critical.

At the home, investigators found multiple shell casings scattered across the floor. A woman who later returned to the residence said she found Marin sitting calmly on the living room couch after the shooting, according to KTSM.

Officers soon arrived and took Marin into custody without incident, recovering the weapon believed to have been used in the attack.

Community Shock and Ongoing Investigation

The Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the case as residents of the quiet Santa Teresa neighborhood try to process the disturbing event.

Authorities have not released details on what led to the argument or whether mental health issues may have played a role.

Neighbors described the family as “quiet” and “normal”, saying they were stunned by the violence.

“It’s heartbreaking — a mother just trying to calm her son down, and this happens,” one neighbor told local media.

Police say the victim remains in critical but stable condition at a local hospital. Marin is being held at the Doña Ana County Detention Center while awaiting his first court appearance.
