North Carolina Driver Shoots Marine Dead During Road Rage Clash While He Rode New Motorcycle He Hoped to Share With His Kids
ONSLOW COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA — A U.S. Marine and father of two was shot dead in broad daylight while enjoying a Sunday ride on his new motorcycle, a bike he told friends he dreamed of riding one day “with his sons as they grew older.”
According to the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office, 31-year-old Dylan Rasmussen, an active-duty Marine, was killed in a road rage confrontation on October 19, when a driver stopped, argued with him, and fatally shot him in the chest before fleeing.
Marine Father Shot Dead in Sudden Road Rage Incident
Deputies say James Wells, 43, was driving on Burgaw Highway near Holly Shelter Road when he became involved in a verbal altercation with Rasmussen. According to an arrest warrant, Wells stopped his vehicle, confronted Rasmussen, and pulled out a firearm during the heated exchange.
“During the verbal altercation, [Wells] produced a firearm and shot the victim once in the chest,” the affidavit stated.
Emergency responders rushed Rasmussen to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators confirmed that the tragedy stemmed from a road rage incident and that the two men did not know each other prior to the encounter.
‘Life Is Way Too Short’: Officials Condemn Violence Behind the Wheel
Onslow County District Attorney Ernie Lee described the shooting as senseless, urging drivers not to let anger lead to irreversible consequences.
“We now have two individuals, one deceased and one sitting in jail,” Lee said. “Life is just way too short to engage in this type of behavior. Don’t pull a weapon on someone—it’s not worth it.”
Sheriff Chris Thomas echoed the warning, urging residents to avoid confronting aggressive or enraged drivers.
“You never know what a stranger is capable of,” he said. “Do not engage or escalate — get to safety and call authorities.”
Victim Remembered as Devoted Marine, Husband, and Father
Friends and family of Rasmussen described him as a devoted husband, father, and Marine who had recently purchased his motorcycle and was looking forward to sharing his love of riding with his children.
“Dylan was trying to enjoy his Sunday afternoon ride,” said Ryne Snooks, owner of Ready to Ride, a local motorcycle shop Rasmussen had visited just days earlier. “He had just gotten a haircut and was heading home.”
A GoFundMe campaign launched for Rasmussen’s wife and two sons described him as a man who “dedicated his life not only to serving his country but above all, to protecting his family.”
He “often spoke of how he looked forward to riding motorcycles with his sons as they grew older,” the fundraiser read.
Shooter Charged and Held on $500,000 Bond
Wells was arrested shortly after the shooting and charged with second-degree murder. He is currently being held in the Onslow County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
Authorities continue to investigate the deadly encounter, which they call an isolated incident.
