Northern Indiana Weather Alert: Wintry Mix and Lake Effect Snow Expected Sunday into Monday

Fort Wayne, IN – Northern Indiana residents are being warned to brace for a wintry system this weekend that could bring rain, snow, and a sharp drop in temperatures, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Northern Indiana office.

Forecast Overview

Rain is expected to develop Saturday afternoon before mixing with or changing to snow overnight, especially north of U.S. 6. Light accumulations of around one inch are possible across far northeast Indiana and nearby parts of southwest Michigan.

By Sunday, the system will evolve into a mix of rain and snow, transitioning to lake effect snow by late afternoon. The heaviest snowfall is likely near Lake Michigan, where localized totals could reach up to 4 inches from La Porte to South Bend and Benton Harbor.

Travel Impacts and Safety Concerns

The greatest travel impacts are expected Sunday night into Monday morning, as lake effect snow combines with strong northwest winds, potentially reducing visibility and creating slick, icy roads.

“Motorists should prepare for difficult travel late Sunday and early Monday, especially near Lake Michigan,” forecasters cautioned.

Temperatures will plummet into the low 20s overnight, with wind chills in the teens. On Monday, highs are expected to remain in the upper 30s, marking a noticeably colder start to the workweek.

Outlook and Preparedness

While meteorologists express moderate confidence in exact snowfall totals, there is high confidence in a significant temperature drop and lake effect development. The cold pattern may persist into Tuesday, with flurries continuing near the lakeshore before drier weather returns midweek.

Drivers are urged to plan for slower travel Monday morning, especially in northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan, and to monitor forecast updates as conditions evolve through the weekend.
