Indiana Man Arrested After High-Speed Chase from Clarksville Ends in Fiery Crash on I-65 in Louisville
LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY — A police chase that began in Clarksville, Indiana, crossed state lines and ended in a violent crash on Interstate 65 in Louisville Thursday night, leading to the arrest of a man who was allegedly armed with an AK-style rifle, authorities said.
According to Clarksville Police Chief Nathan Walls, officers attempted to stop a vehicle around 9 p.m. after receiving information that it may have been involved in another crime. When officers tried to pull the driver over, the man refused to stop — instead, he allegedly tried to ram police vehicles, striking one cruiser during the attempt.
Chase Crosses Into Louisville
The pursuit escalated quickly, with the suspect fleeing across the Ohio River into downtown Louisville, where he ultimately crashed near the St. Catherine exit off I-65 South. Authorities shut down the exit ramp and a portion of the highway temporarily while clearing the wreckage.
After the crash, police say the suspect exited his vehicle carrying an AK-style rifle and attempted to run from officers. He was captured moments later after a brief foot chase.
“No shots were fired during the incident,” Chief Walls confirmed.
Suspect Injured, Investigation Ongoing
The suspect sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and was taken into custody. Officials have not yet released his name or detailed the original crime linked to the attempted stop.
The Louisville Metro Police Department assisted in the arrest and scene management as part of the multi-agency response.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities review dashcam footage and coordinate with Indiana and Kentucky prosecutors regarding potential charges, including attempted assault on officers, fleeing police, and weapons violations.
Highway Reopened After Major Delays
Traffic along I-65 South near downtown Louisville was delayed for nearly an hour as law enforcement cleared the scene and towed the wrecked vehicle. Commuters were advised to avoid the area during the late-night cleanup operation.
No officers were injured during the incident.
