Northern Mississippi Weather Alert: Severe Thunderstorm Watch Brings Hail and 60 mph Winds Into Friday Night

TUPELO, MISSISSIPPI – Residents across northeast Mississippi are under a severe thunderstorm watch until midnight Friday, with the National Weather Service warning of damaging winds, large hail, and frequent lightning.

Counties and Areas at Risk

The watch covers Alcorn, Prentiss, Tippah, and Tishomingo counties, where forecasters expect storms to intensify along a frontal boundary through the evening.

According to the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, storms could produce gusts up to 60 mph and hail as large as quarters, threatening vehicles, crops, and rooftops.

Travel and Outdoor Impacts

Local emergency officials are cautioning drivers on U.S. Highway 72 and other major routes to prepare for sudden downpours that may reduce visibility.

Outdoor events could be postponed, and residents are advised to secure loose items that could be blown around by the wind.

“Families should charge devices, have flashlights ready, and review safe shelter options in case warnings are issued,” officials advised Friday evening.

Power Outage Risks

Downed trees and branches may lead to scattered power outages, particularly in rural areas. Those in mobile homes or temporary shelters are urged to make backup plans and move to sturdier structures if warnings are issued.

Timing of the Storms

The severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 12 a.m. Saturday, though updates could extend the alert if storms continue overnight.
