Ohio Man Accused of Killing and Dismembering Victim Before Driving Around Toledo With Body Parts in Stolen Work Vehicle

TOLEDO, OHIO — A 33-year-old Toledo man has been arrested after police say he murdered and dismembered a 27-year-old victim, then drove around the city in the victim’s stolen work vehicle while officers were actively searching for him. The disturbing case unfolded earlier this week and has shocked the Toledo community.

Victim Reported Missing; Police Track His Work Vehicle Through the City

The victim, Malicai Calder, was reported missing over the weekend after family and coworkers grew concerned when he failed to appear or communicate.
Toledo police launched a search and visited Calder’s home, where they found unsettling signs: a dog barking inside, a shower running, and a television left on. His work vehicle was also nowhere to be found.

On Tuesday, officers located the missing vehicle being driven on Mulberry Drive.
When they pulled it over, they discovered the driver was not Calder — it was Martel Huggins, 33.

Inside the vehicle, officers found evidence they described as incriminating, including body parts belonging to Calder.

Police Say Victim Suffered Stab and Gunshot Wounds Before Being Dismembered

A coroner’s examination revealed Calder suffered both stab wounds and gunshot wounds to the head.
His body had been dismembered, and authorities say parts of his remains were transported inside the work vehicle after his death.

Investigators have not yet determined when the killing occurred or how long Huggins may have been driving around with Calder’s remains.

Authorities also say it is still unknown whether the suspect and victim had a prior relationship. No motive has been released.

Suspect Arrested and Booked Into Lucas County Corrections Center

After being stopped by police, Huggins was arrested on the spot and taken into custody. Jail records show he has been charged with:

  • Murder
  • Assault

He is currently being held at the Lucas County Corrections Center on a $1 million bond.
Court records indicate he is scheduled to appear in court next month.

Police continue to investigate the crime scene, Calder’s residence, and any possible connections or prior interactions between the suspect and victim.

Community Shocked as Investigation Continues

The gruesome nature of the case — involving a missing-person report, a discovered vehicle, and the recovery of dismembered remains — has left Toledo residents shaken.
Authorities say this remains an active and evolving homicide investigation, with additional forensic testing and witness interviews underway.

Officials urge anyone with information about Calder’s last known movements or potential interactions with the suspect to contact Toledo police immediately.
