NEOGA, Ill. — A pedestrian was struck and killed on Interstate 57 in Shelby County Saturday afternoon, according to emergency officials. The incident occurred in the southbound lane near milepost 172, just after 3:30 p.m.

Details of the Collision

Responders from the Neoga Fire Protection District arrived at the scene following reports of a woman who had been hit by a vehicle.

“One person was confirmed deceased at the scene,” the Neoga Fire Protection District reported in an official statement.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim.

Road Closures and Investigation

As a result of the crash, I-57 southbound between Neoga and Effingham has been closed to traffic. Law enforcement and emergency personnel are investigating the cause of the collision and working to clear the scene.

“The southbound section will remain closed until further notice as the investigation continues,” officials said.

Motorists traveling through the area were advised to use alternate routes and expect extended travel delays.
