One Person Killed in Explosion at Louisville AAK Facility

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Authorities confirmed that one person was killed after an explosion rocked the AAK facility in the Shively neighborhood on Sunday afternoon.
Explosion Reported on 7th Street Road
The Louisville and Shively fire departments responded to a fire alarm just after 12:30 p.m. at the plant on the 2500 block of 7th Street Road. Upon arrival, firefighters were informed of a possible explosion inside the facility.
Cause Linked to Hydrogen Tank
According to Shively Fire Chief Charles Mucker, the explosion was traced to a hydrogen tank conversion process within the plant. While no fire was visible when crews arrived, the blast was strong enough to cause significant structural damage.
Officials confirmed that the explosion was isolated to the exterior of the facility and did not spread throughout the building.
One Victim Killed
Emergency responders discovered one victim who had died as a result of the explosion. The individual’s identity has not yet been released, pending notification of family.

The Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) and Louisville Metro Arson investigators have taken over the case, working to determine the precise cause and whether safety protocols were followed.
