Oregon Man Accused of Stalking Sandy Hook Victim’s Father and Harassing His Workplace in Disturbing Threat Campaign
PORTLAND, OREGON — Prosecutors say a 58-year-old Oregon man carried out a disturbing harassment campaign against the father of a child killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, calling his workplace repeatedly, contacting his co-workers, and claiming the grieving parent would “get what was coming to him.”
Kevin Purfield was arrested and charged with felony stalking and 10 counts of telephonic harassment following what authorities describe as a years-long pattern of targeting families connected to mass-shooting tragedies.
Prosecutors: Suspect Has History of Targeting Grieving Families
According to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, Purfield has been “repeatedly convicted” of stalking and harassing the families of mass-shooting victims. A newly filed probable cause affidavit says he has shown up unannounced at victims’ homes and targeted public officials as recently as this fall.
Prosecutors say he began stalking the Sandy Hook father in 2013, then escalated his behavior this year by contacting the man’s employer, Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).
Threatening Calls to Hospital Employees
On Oct. 24, Purfield allegedly called an OHSU employee twice, asking whether the father worked there and saying he had reported Purfield to the FBI.
He also allegedly warned the staff member that the father was going to “get what was coming to him,” alarming employees and triggering security protocols at the major hospital system.
A week later, OHSU issued a permanent exclusion order, followed by a no-contact directive warning Purfield that any further communication would be considered criminal harassment.
Suspect Allegedly Ignored Orders and Continued Calling
Despite the restrictions, prosecutors say Purfield immediately violated the orders:
- Minutes after being served with a restraining order, he called an OHSU line and claimed the father’s “daughter was never killed.”
- Hours later, he allegedly called again, using profanity and demanding to know who provided information for the court order.
- He allegedly then contacted OHSU dispatch, saying he knew where the father “works and lives.”
- Within the same hour, he placed another call referencing the OHSU police chief and sent an email describing the “view” from an official’s home.
- Thirty minutes later, he allegedly sent a text to the father referencing an address in Washington, D.C., and mentioning “Barack Obama.”
Prosecutors say the pattern showed clear disregard for court orders and a persistent effort to intimidate.
Arrested After Rapid Escalation
Police arrested Purfield at his Portland apartment later that evening. He is currently being held without bail, according to jail records.
His arraignment on stalking and harassment charges is scheduled for Dec. 5.
Prosecutors emphasized that the father — who has endured years of conspiracy-driven harassment since losing his child at Sandy Hook — has once again been forced into a frightening ordeal.
