Packers Watch Party in Waukesha Honors Late Fan, Raises Funds for Children’s Wisconsin

WAUKESHA, Wis. — What began as one man’s backyard event has grown into a full community tradition. A Green Bay Packers watch party, founded by the late Rick Hanfler, drew hundreds this weekend to honor his legacy while raising money for Children’s Wisconsin.

From Backyard Gathering to Community Fundraiser

Rick Hanfler started the annual watch party seven years ago as a way to combine his passion for the Packers with his desire to give back. In his final months battling terminal cancer, Hanfler asked his family to keep the tradition alive.

This year, the event outgrew the Hanflers’ backyard and was hosted at Okauchee Lions Community Park, showing just how much support it has gained.

How the Event Works

Guests paid $75 for food, drinks, and game access, while raffle proceeds and donations went directly to Children’s Wisconsin. The mix of football, food, and community created an atmosphere that was celebratory yet deeply meaningful for attendees.

Growing Impact for Children’s Wisconsin

Last year, the fundraiser collected $14,000, which doubled to $28,000 on Giving Tuesday. Organizers said totals for this year are already surpassing previous efforts, continuing the upward trend.

“This event is bigger than I ever imagined. And Rick is smiling down from heaven,” said Debbie Hanfler, his widow.

Family friend Victor Rohrig of Oconomowoc added, “I think he would be extremely pleased. He’s watching this with a big smile on his face. This is exactly what he wanted.”

Rick Hanfler’s wish was simple: to keep supporting children’s health while celebrating the team he loved. Each year, as the Packers take the field, his spirit lives on through a community that rallies behind both football and a greater cause.
