Pueblo Colorado Weather: Strong Thunderstorms With 70 MPH Gusts and Hail Expected After 1 PM Sunday

PUEBLO, Colo. — Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across eastern Colorado Sunday afternoon, bringing the threat of 70 mph wind gusts and hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter.
Timing and Storm Development
Forecasters said storms will begin forming shortly after 1 p.m., rolling off the mountains before intensifying across the far eastern plains. The most dangerous period is expected around 5 p.m., when storms strengthen while moving through Lamar, Springfield, Burlington, and nearby towns.
“The primary hazards include hail measuring 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter and wind gusts reaching 60 to 70 mph,” the NWS Pueblo office reported.
Travel and Outdoor Impacts
Drivers should expect hazardous conditions along U.S. Highway 50 and Interstate 70, where blowing debris, reduced visibility, and hail-slick pavement are likely.
“Outdoor events across the plains face a high risk of disruption, and residents are urged to secure loose items and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings,” officials cautioned.
Communities east of Pueblo — including La Junta and Eads — are advised to prepare for rapidly changing conditions.
Safety Concerns and Power Risks
With damaging winds possible, power outages cannot be ruled out if lines are knocked down. Emergency officials stressed the need for residents to monitor warnings closely as storms evolve.
“Strong winds and large hail can cause significant damage. Having multiple alert methods in place is critical during severe weather days,” weather service meteorologists said.
Severe thunderstorm warnings are expected to remain in effect through Sunday night, with potential advisories issued if storms linger into the overnight hours.
Residents across Colorado’s plains are urged to stay alert and prepared as dangerous weather threatens travel, outdoor events, and power infrastructure. For more weather alerts and safety updates, visit ChicagoMusicGuide.com.
