Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7’s Display Can Survive 500,000 Folds — That’s Over a Decade of Use

CHICAGO — Samsung’s latest foldable flagship, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, has achieved a major leap in durability — its flexible display is officially rated to survive 500,000 folds, more than double the limit of its predecessor models.

According to Engadget, the phone’s foldable OLED panel “remained fully functional” after 13 days of stress testing conducted by certification agency Bureau Veritas, which ran the device through half a million folds.

At a usage rate of 100 folds per day, the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s screen could theoretically last over 10 years, eliminating one of the biggest concerns among foldable skeptics.

How Samsung Reinvented Its Foldable Display

To achieve this milestone, Samsung borrowed from bulletproof glass design principles. The company says it:

  • Increased the outer glass thickness by 50%
  • Applied high-elastic adhesives between each display layer
  • Reinforced the display with a titanium support plate
  • Evenly distributed shock across the screen surface

Despite the added strength, Samsung engineers also redesigned the internal structure to make the phone feel thinner and more like a standard smartphone.

A Huge Step Forward From Past Generations

Earlier Galaxy Z Fold generations — from the original Fold through Fold 6 — were rated for just 200,000 folds. In one early CNET stress test, the first-generation Fold lasted only 119,380 folds before failing — well short of its claimed threshold.

But this time, Samsung appears confident: “Durability is no longer a limiting factor in the lifespan of foldable smartphones,” the company said in its official release.

What This Means for Foldable Adoption

Durability has long been the Achilles’ heel of foldables. With a display that now survives 2.5 times more folds than previous models, the Z Fold 7 could be a turning point for mainstream buyers still hesitant about switching.

Whether it’s used for productivity, gaming, or creative work, consumers can now rely on the foldable form factor with far fewer worries about wear and tear.
